Intro | Disclaimer | Warning | Apology

This is an edit of a previous entry I wrote while I was angry and upset. Needless to say, having my anger and upset intermingle with genuine issues was not a great idea.

At the time I wrote this I had just learned that through either reckless irresponsibility, or malicious intention, the OSC Discord was encouraging their users to harass this community.

I was also accused of doing the same with this post. And it really goes as a testament on how non-productive open anger is.

I don’t condone communities that encourage their userbase to harass, nor do I endorse any user that takes out of context actions as a reason to react with harassment.

The misunderstanding has been corrected (I hope) and I’ve re-written this article to state our stance on the HBB/OSC issue and remove most of the emotion from it.

What is Homebrew Browser?

Homebrew Browser was a piece of Wii Homebrew that worked similar to today’s App Repositories. The idea is you only have to install the browser/installer application to browse the software they would provide for you. Then you can choose to install it to your Wii. It will pull the software from the repository and install it on your Wii

It never really worked that well. And once you got done browsing the homebrew, and installing the novelties, uninstalling the novelties, and keeping the important software, it collects dust.

As it got later in its years, there were often times the server that hosted the software was unavailable. By that time the only people who used it were new modders that had just stumbled upon the modding community.

This was my experience with it, and I do know I am not the only one who feels this way about it. I had lost interest in the software within a year of discovering it.

What is the Open Shop Channel?

The Open Shop Channel is the continuation, or reboot of this software. It contains more than just the homebrew browser, applications that do the same but now on your PC too.

The HBB Wii app however has been modified little since the original and still has most the same issues as the original.

What is our official stance on the software?

Each staff member is entitled to their own opinion and their own choice to support or not support HBB/OSC. Though I don’t think anyone in our modstaff uses it.

HBC/OSC posts are not allowed on the subreddit. But if we can help with it in the discord, we will. Typically the issues that come up with it are not with it, but Wii networking issues.

The general consensus among the experienced modders in our community is that they don’t use it, so they can’t support it for you.

The reason why we don’t allow posts is because like loader posts, they are all the same issues, and rarely get traction.

Currently we refer users that have issues with the software to the OSC/HBB development team and have been for over a year now.

Outro

We’re glad someone is openly developing improvements to the homebrew scene. We don’t use it, we personally don’t see a need for it. But we’re here to help our users and we feel they can best be served by the developers of the application than us.

Which we’re glad for, as most homebrew has no support these days.

We don’t really enjoy being targeted for not liking or endorsing certain pieces of software, and oddly enough this isn’t a new occurrence. There have been other pieces of Wii Homebrew or Homebrew utilities we’ve spoken out as being not in support of and have had some visceral reactions just from those opinions.

We’re glad to work with any software development team to help them resolve issues that we have with their software if we can.
